(15 Apr 2008 11:23): Silvia Berlusconi's election victory in Italy returning him for the third time as Prime Minister with a more stable parliament, may be an astonishment to the rest of the world, but he clearly hits a soft spot in the Italian psyche. A charming, flamboyant Libra with a first house Sun and an exuberantly outspoken Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 3rd he can appear wildly way over the top at times; with a square from a 12th house Neptune to Jupiter perhaps giving a hint of his somewhat hidden financial dealings resulting in a string of corruption charges. His Jupiter squares onto a Neptune Saturn opposition so he's lucky, though also irresponsible, indecisive and tends to take shortcuts, looking for the instant solutions. One outcome of this overly expansive Jupiter during his last premiership was to let public finances in Italy run out of control, threatening to de-stabilise the euro. With Pluto in the 10th he is a controlling personality and hard working with Moon Saturn in the 6th.
On all of his election victories (1994, 2001, 2008) he's had Saturn in a mutable sign hard aspecting his 6th house Saturn and triggering that mutable T square. In 1994 Jupiter was also opposing his 8th house Uranus bringing sudden success but like all Uranian events it was short lived since he was out the following year, not unexpected since transitting Uranus was also opposing is Pluto. In 2001 Jupiter was conjunct his midheaven, and both Mars and Pluto in Sagittarius were close to his 3rd house Jupiter; Saturn was in his 9th carrying him through 5 years of office. This time round his Secondary Progressed Sun is within half a degree of that Jupiter which again pulled the magician's trick and brought him back to power.
But he won't have his troubles to seek this time with Italy's economic growth at zero,major internal problems, including Naples uncollected rubbish mountain and Alitalia, the national airline losing a million euros a day. This year will bring disappointments and his popularity won't stay high for long as Neptune squares Mars/Jupiter from mid May onwards. But his irrepressible confidence will bounce him back up come July. Whether he'll last the full five years is questionable since Saturn will oppose his 6th house Moon and Saturn from autumn 08 and then Saturn moves across his ascendant into his first quadrant from late 09 which may point to failing stamina. He'll undoubtedly change direction come 2010.
That's the point where Italy starts to hit really major problems. The Italy chart has a Jupiter Sun in Cancer opposition to Saturn Moon in Capricorn square Mars in Libra which will start to fall foul of transitting Saturn in late 2010, Pluto in 2011 and Uranus in 2012. So Italy will be in the eye of the astrological storm.
Berlusconi's composite with Italy is a gloriously Italian mix of wild enthusiasm, affection and dislike in equal measure, and inherently unstable. A Uranus Pluto conjunction squares Mars Venus Jupiter so he can boost morale by promising miracles, is loved because he's an adventurer, but he's also regarded as too power hungry, too changeable and often out of step with public mood and needs. The insecurities will become more obvious with aggravation and impatience around in October as transitting Uranus opposes the composite Mars. Indeed the economically depressed Uranus Saturn opposition of late 08 into 09 will serious chip away at his popularity, causing a major turnaround in his fortunes from April 09 onwards as transitting Uranus squares the composite Pluto. By late 09 there will be real discouragement with his premiership
